The team from the Petroleum Engineering Study Program, the Faculty of Engineering Promotion Team, and the Center for Energy Studies (PSE) at Universitas Islam Riau (UIR) conducted a socialization program and short training on potential energy sources.

In order to apply one of UIR’s visions to build mutually beneficial partnerships with experts, industry, society and government, both locally, nationally and internationally, the Petroleum Engineering Promotion Team, the Faculty of Engineering Promotion Team and the Energy Study Center (PSE) of Universitas Islam Riau collaboration with Education and Culture Official of Bengkulu Province to organize a short training of Geothermal Potential in order to Heads of High Schools and Vocational Schools in Bengkulu province which aims to build awareness to the frontline of human resources on local wisdom both natural and human resources. It is hoped that this activity can encourage efforts to increase the potential of local Human Resources (HR) in Bengkulu Province to become skilled experts in the field of geothermal, both geothermal technicians and engineers.

The Head of Bengkulu Province Education and Culture Office, Drs. Eri Yulian Hidayat accompanied by the Head of UIR Energy Center, H. Dike Fitriansyah Putra, ST, MSc, MBA, attended and officially opened the Geothermal Potential Short Training in Bengkulu Province, held at the UPTD Taman Budaya Hall of Bengkulu Province on Friday (8/7/22).
On this occasion, Drs. Eri Yulian Hidayat said that Bengkulu has tremendous natural resource potential, including geothermal. If the geothermal technology entering the Bengkulu region is not supported by local human resources with basic and advanced education on geothermal technology, then in the future, the people of Bengkulu will have the same fate as other regions in Sumatra such as oil-rich Riau and gas-rich Aceh.

He also hoped that the participants wich consisting of the Heads of the Education Department branches in North Bengkulu, Rejang Lebong, South Bengkulu, Lebong, Seluma, Kepahiang, and Central Bengkulu as well as the Heads of Vocational Schools present would try to think about and create geothermal study programmes in existing vocational schools or create special geothermal vocational schools in potential areas in Bengkulu.

Head of UIR Energy Centre, H. Dike Fitriansyah Putra also hoped that the cooperation between Universitas Islam Riau and Bengkulu Provincial Government in improving Bengkulu’s local human resources can be implemented immediately in an effort to catch up in preparing technicians and engineers for geothermal technology.

The Governor of Bengkulu Province, Dr H Rohidin Mersyah, fully supported the event, which was held to promote new and renewable energy (Geothermal) activities in the region. Two weeks prior to the event, he expressed his enthusiasm for the idea. The hope is that the people of Bengkulu will not only be spectators, but also active participants in these activities.

The Hululais WKP has been under exploration since 2012. In 2016, two geothermal wells were drilled, followed by one more in 2017. Six additional wells are scheduled to be drilled in 2021. The Hululais Project, located in WKP Hulululais, Bengkulu Province, is a geothermal generation project with a production capacity of 2 x 55 MW. Currently, the project is in the drilling and production testing stages.

WKP Hululais is managed by PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy. It is a geothermal concession area that was established prior to Law No. 27 of 2003 jo. and was determined based on the Decree of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources No. 2067 K/30/MEM/2012 dated 18 June 2012. The Hululais geothermal development project is located in the South Lebong District of Lebong Regency. The Hululais Extension exploration project is situated in the Rimbo Pengadang District of Lebong Regency and the Bermani Ulu Raya District of Rejang Lebong Regency.

At the beginning of the presentation, H. Dike F. Putra, ST, M.Sc, MBA, P.Eng provided an overview of the study programmes offered by the Faculty of Engineering UIR, including Petroleum Engineering, Geology, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, PWK, and Informatics. Additionally, he briefly explained the study programmes that directly support the exploration, exploitation, and development of geothermal energy, such as Petroleum Engineering and Geology. The presentation continued with an explanation of basic geothermal theory, Bengkulu’s geothermal potential, laws governing the geothermal industry, and investment and benefits for academics and the people of Bengkulu if geothermal energy development is planned carefully, focused and directed. The presentation and video covered the basics of geothermal.

More than 50 participants from 10 cities and regencies in Bengkulu province attended this activity. They were enthusiastic and asked questions about study programmes that support geothermal technology and the continuation mechanism of geothermal technology education.
